Farley History
Farley Hall was built in 1946 and was named for Father John "Pop" Farley. Pop Farley, an ND alumnus himself, served as the rector of Corby, Walsh, and Sorin Halls. The affectionate nickname for Father Farley has its roots in his endearing habit of calling the residents of his then all-male dorm "my boys". It is said that Pop Farley never missed an event in which one of his residents participated. Because of the family-like atmosphere he created, the boys began to call him "Pop". The name stuck until his death in 1939.
Farley Hall was the first dorm constructed after WWII as a result of an increased need for student housing. Father Ted Hesburgh served as the first rector. In his annual talk during Pop Farley week, Father Hesburgh fondly recalls his first move-in day as rector when 330 freshmen boys moved in to Farley, which today comfortably houses 216 girls.
When Farley Hall opened, North Quad was known as "Freshman Quadrangle" because underclassmen were housed on the north side of campus. In the 1960s, this custom ended when the university implemented the "stay-hall" system in which students live in the same dorm for four years, and Farley became the test case.
Along with Breen-Phillips Hall (our jolly neighbors to the south), Badin Hall, and Walsh Hall, Farley was one of the first halls to be converted into a women's dorm when Notre Dame became co-ed in 1973, just one year after the university became co-ed. The first female rector of the dorm was Sister Jean Lenz (who, after her tenure, lived on the second floor until her passing in 2012). Her book Loyal Sons and Daughters, which details those early years as a women’s dorm, can be purchased in the bookstore.
Farley Hall is one of three women’s dorms on North Quad (there are sixteen women’s dorms in total). It is conveniently located next to the North Dining Hall (a definite plus when you want to dash for food when it is raining or freezing outside!) From Farley, it is a short walk to the Hesburgh Library for all you study fanatics (and there is one deep inside all of us). If a severe case of munchies should strike at 1:00 a.m., The LaFortune Student Center is only a beeline away and has a variety of food options. Not more than a 10-minute walk from Farley is the Rock or Duncan for all you girls who like the gym. In general, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find that Farley has a fantastic location.
