There are 32 Residence Halls here at Notre Dame. There are distinct residential areas, called quads, where dorms built in the same time period are gathered together. North, South, West, East, God, Mod, and Far...it can get a little confusing. To learn more about the other dorms on campus, some unofficial info is below and some official info here.
North Quad (that's us!)
Keenan Hall "Knights" are best known for the annual Keenan Review when they mock pretty much everyone and everything about ND. With a great sense of humor, what else can you ask for?
Stanford Hall is actually attached to Keenan. The "Griffins" are awesome guys and are right across the quad. They're known for their fall Rave for the Brave, which raises money for The Wounded Warriors Project.
Zahm House "Zahmbies" are responsible for the North Quad Playlist (Sometimes known to play Disney songs...who knew?). They really enjoy throwing cups down the stairs from the upper level of the dining hall, and they hold a petting zoo complete with llamas every spring.
Cavanaugh Hall The "Chaos" live diagonally across the quad from Farley. These women have tons of spirit! They also have the privilege of being located right next to the LaFortune Student Center. Like Farley, Cav is an older dorm and, until recently, housed ND men.
Breen-Phillips Hall "Babes" live right next door to you! You can easily find the women of BP roaming around campus in their fun pink shirts. BP is famous for their meal auction where students can bid on dinners with various campus "celebrities."
God Quad
Sorin College is the original dorm at Notre Dame, not to mention the home of the University president emeritus, Monk Malloy. Don't let that hinder you from visiting the home of the "Otters." They have some really unique rooms, all with ridiculously high ceilings--and their front porch swings are another great place to hang out.
Walsh Hall "Wild Women" live right next door to the Sorin boys, and they are our fabulous Sister Dorm this year! Every year, they host "Football 101"--a crash course for learning everything you need to know about football at ND. They also put on an annual Mr. ND contest.
Lewis Hall has a bit of an identity crisis, since no one really knows which quad they belong to, but it is located right behind the Dome. The "Chicks" live in the largest women's dorm on campus and are famous for the Lewis Crush, a fun-filled week ending in a dance during the spring. They also host LHOP, which is a night of pancakes, waffles, eggs, and cinnamon rolls. YUM!
St. Edward's Hall, commonly referred to as St. Ed's or just Sted's, has a lot of strengths, but creativity doesn't seem to be one of them--"gentlemen" of St. Ed's is their nickname/mascot. They make up for it, though, with some pretty rich history. It is the oldest dorm on campus, used to be an elementary school, and has survived a fire. It is also known for its Yacht Dance at the end of the year. Safe to say the Men of St. Ed's are here to stay!
South Quad Regardless of where they live, the South Quad domers have one thing in common--they all think that their dining hall is better than ours. We know that they love NDH deep down, but they just can't admit it because they're jealous!
Alumni Hall "Dawgs" who refer to their home as the "Center of the Universe" and actually do have a couple things to brag about--their Alumni Wake is one of the most popular SYRs of the year.
Dillon Hall is the biggest dorm on campus, and its men are fittingly called the "Big Red." They showcase their awesome sense of humor every year with the season-opening Dillon Pep Rally, followed by the Dillon Hall Christmas Light Show, and a new spring event modeled after the NFL Pro Day.
Fisher Hall may be an eyesore architecturally speaking, but every spring, the "Green Wave" hosts the Fisher Regatta and invites dorms to build and race their own boats on St. Mary's Lake.
Pangborn Hall, home of the "Phoxes," is right next to Fisher! This past Spring they started a new Easter Egg Hunt on campus. Two large lion statues sit outside of Pangborn, maybe to provide extra security for the residents?
Lyons Hall is home to the famous arches seen in the movie Rudy! The "Lions" also have their own basketball and beach volleyball courts if you want to get a game started. They also host the campus-wide Mara Fox Memorial Run every year in honor of a former resident who was killed by a drunk driver.
Morrissey Manor seems to be a little bit beyond the "hall" status, so they refer to their home as Morrissey Manor, and the residents are "Manorites." They host a campus-wide medallion hunt in the spring with a cash prize to the lucky seeker.
Howard Hall gives nearby Lyons competition with their own set of cute arches. The Howard "Ducks" have a country-and-western themed ho-down as their signature event every fall.
Badin Hall "Bullfrogs" live in the smallest girl's dorm on campus, but they still have plenty of spirit! We're a little envious of their second-story porch complete with swings but can't help but love the Badin Breakdown--a karaoke event they host every spring.
West Quad
Welsh Family Hall "Whirlwinds" are some of the most athletic girls on campus, so watch out for them in interhall competitions. They put on campus-wide Welsh Family Feud in the spring in which teams from every dorm compete in a game show-style event.
Keough Hall is where you'll find the "Kangaroos," and possibly some toga clad residents! Keough starts off the year with their annual Chariot Race, a campus-wide event that involves dorms racing against each other and ends with Keough's Fall Toga Dance.
O'Neill Hall is the home of the "Angry Mob," but don't worry, these Mobsters won't bite. This dorm has tons of spirit and a strong showing at most campus events--especially at their signature event, the Ms. ND Pageant.
McGlinn Hall, where the "Shamrocks" live, is famous for its annual Casino Night event. These girls are pretty sporty as well, as they are lucky enough to have sand volleyball and basketball courts right outside their dorm!
Duncan Hall, established in 2008, features a strong brotherhood, a 2nd floor chapel, and a luxurious view of the golf course. Each year the Highlanders host the Duncan Highrise, a formal in the Willis Tower, Chicago, and the Duncan Classic, a golf tournament.
Ryan Hall has the bookstore right in their backyard, and while we were a little jealous at first, we're almost glad we don't live so close. (We would spend all of our money on Notre Dame merch if we did!) The "Wildcats" host an Annual Wheelchair Basketball tournament as well as a clothing drive known as uNDdie huNDie.
Baumer Hall is a men's residence hall, opening Fall 2020! (Temporarily housed the Dillon Community in the 2019-20 academic year.)
Mod Quad These funky neighbors have a lot of unique traditions and styles, but the best thing we have in common with them is the undying loyalty for North Dining Hall. You'll come to recognize the Siegfried boys and PE girls in line for the pasta bar real quick.
Pasquerilla West is home to the "Purple Weasels," which even we'll admit is a pretty cool mascot. Pasquerilla West is a bit of a mouthful, so we refer to it as PW, or even more simply PDub. The ladies of PDub host Queen Week, a series of competitions, as their signature event.
Pasquerilla East's interior is a mirror image of Pasquerilla West, and is located 10 feet away from PDub. To make the building even more confusing, its floors are numbered 5, 6, 7, and 8--as opposed to starting the first floor with, uh, the number 1. But never fear, you can always tell the lady "Pyros" apart from the rest. PE hosts a wing eating competition "Can you take the heat?" every spring.
Knott Hall was originally built as a women's dorm, and boasts the largest closets and mirrors among the male dorms, which makes them pretty fabu in our opinion. The "Juggerknott's" can be identified by their bright orange beanies and have claimed "Knott Quadrangle" as their own.
Siegfried Hall is located right behind Farley! These men are famous for Day of Man, in which they walk around in t-shirts, shorts, and flip-flops for charity. Did we mention this takes place in mid-January? If you catch some guys running around in Viking helmets, you can be sure it's the Siegfried "Ramblers" in some athletic competition!
East Quad
Flaherty Hall is a female residence hall, located behind the Hesburgh Library. The "Flaher Bears" have a ton of pride for their home, and we're excited to build a fine friendship with our fellow F-named female hall!
Dunne Hall is a male residence hall, situated just beside Flaherty on the far side of campus. Much like Flaherty, these Sentinels have been working hard the last few years to blaze their trail on campus, hosting the Dunne Funne Runne as their signature event. If you ask any one of these men whether they've finished loving their hall - they'll tell you "We're not Dunne yet!"
Johnson Family Hall is a female residence hall, debuting in Fall 2020! The Valkyries are our new sisters on this side of Main building!
Far Quad
Carroll Hall counts St. Mary's Lake and the D6 parking lot among its neighbors, but despite its solitude, the "Vermin" of Carroll are worth the trek. You may have caught a glimpse of this dorm on ESPN a few years back, when they gained fame by hanging a huge "Go Irish" sign covering the entire front of the building. These days, Carroll sustains its popularity with their "A Carroll Christmas" event, which is sure to put you in the holiday spirit.
